Wheeling Tunnel renovation completed
WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) — Traffic is moving through the Wheeling Tunnel’s westbound tube again following completion of a major overhaul.
The Intelligencer in Wheeling reports that the westbound tube reopened Thursday evening, two months earlier than projected and within the project’s $6.7 million budget.
Renovation of the eastbound tube by a different contractor didn’t go as smoothly. That phase of the project was completed more than two years later than originally projected and exceeded its budget.
The project’s total cost was about $14.3 million. The cost includes an out-of-court settlement between the Division of Highways and the contractor that renovated the eastbound tube.
