Kitchen at HFD damaged by fire
HUNTINGTON -- City firefighters hurried to a call late afternoon Friday, all while mistakenly leaving behind a hot burner with French fry oil.
Huntington Fire Chief Carl Eastham said the incident happened about 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Centennial Fire Station, located along 7th Avenue in downtown Huntington. The crew was cooking hamburgers and fries when its members received the call.
The unsupervised fry oil eventually ignited and flames spread to a cabinet above -- too large for a simple fire extinguisher. The crew used a fire hose instead, Eastham said.
Eastham described the damage as small. It might require a new stove, a few cabinets, paint and cleaning, along with repair of the kitchen's drop-down ceiling. He said, at most, the damage might tally $10,000 to $15,000, a portion of which will be paid by insurance.
The fire did not impact the station's operation. Its firefighters are cooking at another station for the time being.
