Art exhibit honoring Ali goes on display in Ky.

Jan. 17, 2013 @ 04:30 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  — Muhammad Ali sent plenty of opponents crashing to the canvas. Now the boxing great is being portrayed on canvas in an art show that goes on display this week in his hometown of Louisville.

The exhibition features 25 pieces created by 21 artists from across the country. Curators Brady and A. Michelle Blakeley of Sacramento, Calif., asked the artists to recreate their memories of the former heavyweight champion.

Some pieces show Ali in his boxing prime. Artist Corey Pickett of Clovis, N.M., chose to portray Ali’s role in the civil-rights movement.

Pickett’s artwork shows Ali in a red, white and blue background to symbolize his role in American society.

The exhibition goes on public display Friday until March 16 at the Muhammad Ali Center in downtown Louisville.
