IRONTON — Fire destroyed a home remodeling project early Wednesday in Ironton.

The Ironton Fire Department received word of the fire about 3 a.m. Wednesday in the 2200 block of South 6th Street.

Ironton Fire Chief Thomas Runyon said the single-story house was unoccupied and being remodeled. No injuries were reported.

A passerby noticed the flames and alerted emergency dispatchers, Runyon said.

His department arrived moments later to find flames in the basement and smoke from the attic. They believe it started in the basement and spread through walls to the attic, Runyon said.

The precise cause remained under investigation early Wednesday, but Runyon said firefighters did not find anything suspicious upon an initial look at the scene.

The basement received significant floor and structural damage, Runyon said.
