Man sentenced in ’11 nail salon robbery

May. 03, 2013 @ 09:51 AM

HUNTINGTON – A Charleston man pleaded no contest Friday to the robbery of a local nail salon in November 2011. He already entered a similar plea in Putnam County.

Cabell Circuit Judge Paul T. Farrell accepted the plea and ordered the defendant, Cuong Trong Huynh, to a 10-year prison sentence.

Huynh, 26, entered a Kennedy plea to first-degree robbery, which allowed for the conviction without Huynh admitting guilt or explaining his role in the crime. His prison sentence will run simultaneously with any punishment in Putnam County, according to terms of the plea agreement.

The Nov. 9, 2011, robbery happened at Sky Nail & Spa in the 700 block of 9th Avenue. That is where court documents alleged Huynh brandished a gun and removed an undisclosed amount of cash. He was identified as a suspect due to his prior employment at the business.

A couple of days later – Nov. 11, 2011 – Huynh is accused of committing a similar robbery at Top Nails, a nail salon located in the Liberty Square shopping center near Interstate 64 in Teays Valley.

Huynh’s defense attorney said Friday his client has already entered a similar plea in the Putnam case and awaits sentencing there in July.
