Groups working to clean up Huntington this month

August 27, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

Pick Up America is picking its way across the area. The group of recent college graduates is picking up trash in the United States hoping to inspire a transition to a zero waste economy.

Performing this roadside clean-up across the nation over the next two years, the group is traveling through the Mountain State from Kanawha County to the state line near Kenova.

Thus far the group has cleaned more than 8 tons of litter from West Virginia roadsides with the help of a mere 10 local volunteers.

Here's the remaining dates that Pick Up America will be in our area:

FRIDAY, AUG. 27 -- Milton to west of Barboursville: Meet at noon at the Rite Aid in Milton: 1010 South Main Street, Milton, (Note: there are 2 Rite Aids in Milton, this is farther west on Main St. in Milton)

SATURDAY, AUG. 28 -- West of Barboursville to East of Huntington, WV: Meet at noon at the Cracker Barrel in Barboursville: 3 Cracker Barrel Dr. Barboursville, WV 25504

SUNDAY, AUG. 29 -- East of Huntington to Huntington: Meet at noon at the Big Lots in Huntington: 101 Eastern Heights Shopping Center, Huntington,

MONDAY, AUG. 30 -- Huntington to Kenova. Meet at noon at the Harris Riverfront Park: Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Huntington.

On Sept. 13, Pick Up America is partnering with Citizen Action Group to build Recycle Mountain on the lawn of the West Virginia State Capital.

The plan is to use all the recyclables collected in Kanawha County to make pile of unused resources at least 12 feet in diameter and 10 feet high.

In the week preceding the 13th they will construct a river, wind turbines, people, trees, deer, bears, animals, etc. out of aluminum cans while we attend Culture Fest at the Southern Appalachian Folk Life Center.

Come Sept. 13, the group will meet at 11 a.m. at Haddad Park with all its recyclables. With the help of local Charleston volunteers they will carry all of the recyclables 6 blocks to the capital and then begin piling them up. The group is inviting legislators and local community supporters to speak in support of a bottle bill for West Virginia.

Pick Up America members will also speak about their travels through West Virginia. If you would like to be involved or have your affiliated organizations co-sponsor recycle mountain?
