Pa., W.Va. groups want feds to investigate fish kills

September 30, 2009 @ 05:30 PM

MORGANTOWN — Four groups are asking federal regulators to take over the investigation of fish kills along the 38 miles of Dunkard Creek.

They say they lack confidence in West Virginia’s and Pennsylvania’s environmental officials, and say the Environmental Protection Agency should step in.

The Pennsylvania groups are Friends of Dunkard Creek and Greene County Watershed Alliance. The West Virginia groups are Dunkard Creek Watershed Association and Wheeling Creek Watershed Conservancy.

They also want EPA to develop a stream- and habitat-restoration plan.

West Virginia environmental officials have blamed an algae bloom for killing fish, mussels, salamanders and other aquatic life, but say discharges from a coal mine contributed to the conditions that helped create that algae.
