Country star criticizes W.Va. mountaintop mining

September 18, 2008 @ 05:45 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Another country music star is speaking out against mountaintop removal coal mining.

This time it’s “Big” Kenny Alphin of the duo Big & Rich. Alphin calls it shocking that coal companies are getting away with destroying mountains in a statement released Thursday by the Alliance for Appalachia.

The groups says Alphin and Warner Music Group chief John Esposito flew over several West Virginia mining operations Wednesday.

Alphin calls the scale of devastation “shocking” and says you can’t really understand how a mountain can be flattened until you see a mountaintop mine in person.

Country singer and Cross Lanes native Kathy Mattea also has criticized mountaintop removal mining after flying over several mines that employ the high-efficiency mining method.
