I-64 traffic slowed as crash repairs continue
HUNTINGTON — Traffic is once again moving on Interstate 64, but it’s doing so at a slow pace several hours after a tractor-trailer flipped as it crossed the median and slid into oncoming lanes.
The West Virginia Division of Highways has closed one lane of I-64 in both directions at its 17th Street West exit. The eastbound left lane is closed due to guardrail repairs. The westbound right lane is closed for bridge deck repairs.
The guardrail repairs are directly tied to the 4 a.m. crash. The deck repairs are unrelated, said Steve Runyon, a district bridge engineer for the state. He said crews hope to complete their work by 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3.
The crash happened about 4:05 a.m. The truck came to rest between the westbound off ramp and bridge at the 17th Street West exit of I-64.
Huntington Deputy Fire Chief Scott Earl said the eastbound truck caught the guardrail and hit the median upon exiting the bridge. The truck then flipped and slid into the westbound lanes.
The truck was upright and removed by 8 a.m. Emergency crews then cleared the scene by 9 a.m.
Earl and Runyon said crews initially were forced to close all westbound lanes and divert traffic off I-64 at the 17th Street West exit and back on its on ramp.
One eastbound lane was closed due to guardrail damage, Earl said.
The truck’s driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Earl said. A person in its sleeping cab not injured.
