Truck gets stuck in underpass

December 13, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The 20th Street underpass was closed for several hours Wednesday after a tractor trailer hauling 44,000 pounds of rolled wire became stuck.

Cpl. Cass McMillan said the Huntington Police Department was alerted by Cabell County 911 at 8:32 a.m. that the truck's trailer hit the overhead railroad bridge in the left northbound lane. CSX officials also were notified so the bridge could be inspected.

The accident initially closed only the northbound lanes, but southbound was shut down about 45 minutes later to allow officials with the Public Service Commission to inspect the truck and driver logs.

McMillan said the driver may face fines from the PSC and will be cited by HPD for failing to obey a traffic sign.

The 20th Street underpass has a height clearance of 12 feet, 6 inches, as does 14th Street West. The other underpasses as Hal Greer and 1st, 8th and 10th streets all have at least 13 foot clearances.

Huntington police officers redirect traffic after a tractor-trailer became stuck in the 20th Street underpass on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, in Huntington.
