Back-to-school event educates families on health

BARBOURSVILLE — Life is busy, especially when trying to get kids through the beginning of the school year.

That’s what Quanita Thompson of Huntington said while making the rounds of the Hoops Family Children’s Hospital at Cabell Huntington Hospital and Cabell Pediatrics back-to-school health fair at the Huntington Mall Saturday. She said it’s great the hospital and mall put on the event, making it much easier to expose her children to health education.

Dr. James Bailes, pediatric endocrinologist at Cabell Pediatrics, said the health fair is a way to go out into the community and give back to patients. He said the event focused on a little bit of everything, from vision screenings to immunizations.

Physicals, exercise and healthy eating are just as important in the back-to-school pencil box as pens, paper and new clothes, Bailes said. Having the health fair at the mall makes it easy to get health education and school supplies all in one go, he said.
