MATOAKA, W.Va. — A Mercer County man has been charged with setting a fire that destroyed four buildings and damaged a fifth in Matoaka.

Matoaka Police Chief John Sommers tells media outlets that 29-year-old Brandon Paul Coomes of Lashmeet was charged with one count each of third-degree arson and entering without breaking.

Coomes is being held in the Southern Regional Jail on $1 million bond.

No injuries were reported in the fire that caused an estimated $4 million in damage on Friday.

The fire began in a former hotel that was being renovated into apartments.
