HUNTINGTON -- Online registration for the West Virginia 5K Championship Run/Walk will open at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, at www.WV5K.com.

This year's race is planned for 8 a.m. Saturday, June 22, in downtown Huntington. Registration is $20 before June 5. The first 50 registrants will receive a free tech tee upgrade, which is a $10 value. The race is open to runners and walkers.

Participants must register by June 11 to get their names on their bib numbers and by June 17 to be guaranteed a T-shirt. Entry fees are nonrefundable. Participants may also send a print registration form to: West Virginia 5K Championship, 613 Shaw St., Barboursville, WV 25504. Make checks payable to WV 5K Championship.

"The West Virginia 5K Championship was very successful last year, but this year, we want it to be even bigger and better," race Director Pat Riley said in a release. "... This is one of the largest and fastest races in Huntington, and this year, the race falls on West Virginia's 150th anniversary weekend. What better way to celebrate West Virginia than by entering the West Virginia 5K Championship?"

The proceeds of the West Virginia 5K Championship will be invested in efforts to curb childhood obesity in United Way of the River Cities' five-county service area.

In 2012, the race raised $19,000 for United Way of the River Cities, and more than 800 people finished. In 2009, 519 participants finished the race. The race has grown steadily since then, with 541 finishers in 2010 and 680 finishers in 2011.
