Boyfriend charged in shooting death of Morehead student
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- A 26-year-old Rowan County man has been charged with shooting and killing his girlfriend, a part-time Morehead State University student.
Cassandra Owens, 21, died of multiple gunshot wounds Wednesday at the off-campus East Morehead mobile home she shared with Casey Shay. The two had a small child, who was not harmed in the incident and is now being cared for by a grandparent.
Shay turned himself in on Thursday afternoon and was later charged with murder. He is being held with a $1 million bond in the Rowan County Detention Center.
Kevin Koett, Morehead dean of students, reported the victim was a sophomore University Studies major and was enrolled part-time.
"We are all saddened and heartbroken by the death of one of our students," said President Wayne D. Andrews in a news release. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Cassandra. The loss of life at such an early age affects us all."
Investigators said the shooting happened in a bedroom of the mobile home, and officers have confiscated a semi-automatic pistol.
