HUNTINGTON — The 2013 Marshall football dates were released by Conference USA on Wednesday afternoon.

The Herd will open the season with its first two contests at the friendly confines of Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Marshall kicks off the 2013 campaign with a game against former Mid-American Conference rival Miami (Ohio) on Aug. 31 before returning the following Saturday (Sept. 7) against FCS opponent Gardner-Webb.

The Herd’s final two road contests will also be within driving distances for fans with Marshall traveling to Peden Stadium to take on rival Ohio on Sept. 14 before heading to Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va., for a Sept. 21 bout against Virginia Tech.

After taking a week off following the non-conference portion of the season, the Herd’s first three conference contests will take place against teams who are new to the league.

Marshall gets its new-look conference alignment underway with West division newcomer UTSA on Oct. 5 before hitting the road on Oct. 12 against Florida Atlantic and Oct. 19 at Middle Tennessee State.

Following an off week to end October, Marshall kicks off a five-game November slate with home games against Southern Miss (Nov. 2) and UAB (Nov. 9).

The final two road games of 2013 will also be back-to-back — this time with trips to Tulsa on Nov. 16 and Florida International on Nov. 23.

The Nov. 23 matchup at Florida International means that quarterback Rakeem Cato, wide receiver Tommy Shuler and the rest of the Herd’s Miami contingent will be home for the weekend before Thanksgiving.

For the third-straight year, Marshall will conclude its regular season against East Carolina. This year’s matchup with the Pirates will be a Nov. 30 date at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
