CSX donates $25K to RTI

HUNTINGTON -- For at least the fourth straight year, CSX has provided funding to the Rahall Transportation Institute to further railway research.
A check presentation was conducted Wednesday for the latest gift, this time for $25,000. It will be matched by the West Virginia Research Trust Fund. CSX also gave $25,000 last December, along with $50,000 in both 2009 and 2010.
Oscar Munoz, the executive vice president and chief operating officer for CSX, flew to town for the latest presentation. He said he was impressed with RTI and its partnership with Marshall University, saying Marshall is doing a good job of delivering productive graduates, while RTI has produced technologies that CSX is using.
But there is more to be done, said Bob Plymale, the director and chief executive officer of RTI and West Virginia senator. Plymale said RTI has in excess of $400,000, with a goal of reaching $1 million in the next two years. At that level, he said the fund will create enough interest to sustain personnel for railway projects.
Those projects, he said, include an evaluation and long-term planning for the structural engineering of aging infrastructure and using new technologies to help trains run more efficiently.
RTI was started in 1999, and Plymale said CSX has been a partner since the beginning.
