Two Cabell Midland seniors chosen as finalists for National Merit Scholarships

ONA — Two seniors from Cabell Midland High School have been named National Merit Scholarship finalists. 

Eric Newfeld, son of Mark and Nancy Newfeld, maintains a 4.618 grade point average. He is undecided on where he will attend college, but is aiming for Washington University in St. Louis or Vanderbilt. He wants to study history and pre-law.

Newfeld’s awards include an AP Scholar with Distinction, second place in psychology in the Marshall S.C.O.R.E.S. test, placed at the West Virginia Math Field Day competition, Rotary Club Student of the Month in 2006 and Ohio Valley Chemical Society Outstanding Chemistry Student.

He also has attended the Governor’s Honor’s Academy and been named outstanding student in numerous subjects during his high school career.

He also is involved with the Rhythm in Red show choir, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honorary, Physics Honorary and Chemistry Honorary, Glee Club, Speech and Debate Team and Young Democrats.

Other activities include community service, a St. Mary’s Medical Center volunteer, Upward Soccer referee, participation in community theater, youth group president at B’Nai Shalom Temple and a retired second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. 

Michael Niemann, son of Mary and Bill Niemann, maintains a 4.604 grade point average. He is undecided about where he will attend college, but also is considering Vanderbilt and Washington University in St. Louis, as well as West Virginia University. His major is undecided, but he is leaning toward physics.

His academic awards include Rising AP Scholar with Honor, second place in the Marshall S.C.O.R.E.S. competition in music theory and third place in psychology, National Honor Society, and Outstanding AP physics, social studies humanities, music theory and chemistry student.

He also was a part of the Marshall University Jazz All-Stars band, named MSAC All-Conference for cross country, a member of Mu Alpha Theta and Tri-M Music Honorary.

He plans various instruments for the show choir and participates in cross country, track, jazz ensemble, student council and ultimate Frisbee.

Outside of school, Niemann is an accomplished pianist and a member of First United Methodist Church, where he plays in the contemporary church band and the hand bell choir. 

He also plays in the rock band Houseplant, which won the 2009 Cabell Midland Battle of the Bands competition.
