Java Joint hosting photo and painting opening tonight
HUNTINGTON — Java Joint in Huntington will be featuring photographs and paintings by two local artists with a reception at the coffee shop beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 11.
The show, titled “Two Beards, One Art Show,” will exhibit artistic pieces by Mark Webb and Christian Alexandersen, both Herald-Dispatch staffers.
Webb, a photographer for the newspaper, will exhibit more than 20 framed photos of landscapes, portraits, nature and abstracts. Several of the featured photographs are from trips to Greece, Washington, D.C. and Dolly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia.
In 2008, Webb received second and third place awards from the West Virginia Press Association for his national forest and sports photo packages.
Webb, a Marshall University grad, said photography began as a hobby but quickly became his all-consuming passion. Since becoming a professional photographer and photojournalist, Webb has shot concerts, visiting presidential candidates, album art, Marshall sports and everything in between.
Alexandersen, a reporter for the newspaper, will show a selection of paintings done over the past year that feature dripping paint. The drip paintings are done by dripping paint onto the canvas then tilting the canvas so that the paint slowly and evenly drips down.
The result, Alexandersen said, is a unique interaction between paint and gravity. All paintings are acrylic on canvas. Other paintings in the collection diverge from the drip style and show Alexandersen’s artistic range.
The event is free and open to the public. All art will be for sale.
Food and beverages will be served and there will also be live music. The photographs and paintings done by Webb and Alexandersen will be featured at Java Joint and remain for sale until April 11.
Both artists will be on hand March 11 to answer questions about their work.
Java Joint is located at the corner of Hal Greer Boulevard and 3rd Avenue in Huntington. For more information call Java Joint at 304-781-5282. For updates about the event, can search “Two Beards, One Art Show” on Facebook.
