Barnett announces departure from Marshall

Apr. 30, 2014 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University Marching Thunder Director Steve Barnett announced Tuesday that he is leaving the university after an 11-year tenure.

Barnett made his announcement in a mass email message to music students in which he said he had accepted a position with Memphis-based Amro Music as the West Tennessee Educational Representative.

"I will be able to help and serve many students, band directors and schools in the West Tennessee area, which is where I grew up," Barnett said in the message.

Barnett came to Marshall in 2003, leaving an assistant director position at the University of Mississippi. He serves as director of bands and professor of music at Marshall, and conducts the Marshall University Wind Symphony.

He also serves as the Music Program Director for the Marshall University School of Music and Theatre.

Christina Stradwick is a drum major for the Marching Thunder, who said she was with a group of bandmates in Marshall's Memorial Student Center when they all received Barnett's message.

"The rest of this day has just been spent discussing how Mr. Barnett is such a first-class person, who has brought so much to the table for the Marching Thunder and the Music Department here at Marshall," Stradwick said. "His passion for music education has inspired me since middle school. Of course we will be sad to lose him (tears have already been shed by quite a few of us), but it's good to know that he will be such a positive influence on the lives of those in West Tennessee just like he has been for the Marshall community.

"He really is a phenomenal man."
