Students ready for classes

HUNTINGTON -- In Sunday's boiling heat, as he prepared to pick up one of many filled boxes, it hadn't dawned on Mark Spiker that this was the last time he was helping a daughter move in for college.

It's his daughter's senior year at Marshall University, and Jeana Spiker has three older sisters, all of whom attended college.

"I'm glad we didn't move in Friday, when it was raining," Mark Spiker said with a grin, before giving Jeana's shoulder a playful push. "I hope she'll find a job where she's happy."

Jeana, who hails from Ritchie County, said there was a bit of sentiment in realizing it was her "last first time I'll have to move in," but not a whole lot.

"I'm pretty much ready to get on with it," said the criminal justice major. "I'm ready for it to be done."

Though the university makes the weekend before classes start a big event, especially for freshmen, there were plenty of students saying goodbye to parents, or asking them to give them a hand with unwieldy boxes, on Sunday.

Lars Flyger, a computer science major who is beginning his junior year at MU, said moving day is "always stressful."

"I have a lot of stuff this time around," he said, eying a cart he was hauling filled with boxes. "But I'm actually looking forward to the new year. I'm looking forward to learning more in my major."
