Chemical Valley Rollergirls hold meet-and-greet at Town Center

March 04, 2010 @ 02:06 PM

CHARLESTON — The Chemical Valley Rollergirls, Charleston WV's women's flat track roller derby team, is hosting a meet & greet event, Friday March 5, in front of the Salvage Yard on the second floor, Charleston Town Center Mall from 6:30-9pm. The team will be available to answer questions and provide information to anyone looking to lace up the skates or volunteer in other capacities.

"Interest in roller derby is growing nationwide and locally as well," says CVRG's founder and captain Elizabeth Turner, a.k.a. "Liz Vicious," "We want to make our team available to anyone who wants to know more, especially if they are thinking about joining the team."

Previous skating experience is a plus, but by no means required. "When I joined Roller Derby in 2007 I didn't even know how to skate," Turner says, "we can teach all of the basics and with hard work and dedication, we can unveil the derby girl in just about anyone."

The team welcomes new skaters the first Monday of every month at Skateland of
Campbell's Creek, 421 Campbells Creek Drive. A special "Newbie Night" will be held Monday, March 8, to coincide with the Meet & Greet. New skaters are asked to arrive at 6:30pm.
CVRG is happy to meet anyone looking to volunteer on a non-skating basis as well. Referees and non-skating officials are an essential part of the sport as well.

The Salvage Yard, one of the team's sponsors, is located on the second floor of the Charleston Town Center Mall, near JC Penny.

Chemical Valley was founded in October of 2008 and team members have been traveling to various cities in the region to bout with other teams, including Roanoke and Christiansburg, VA, Newport, KY and Cincinatti, OH.
