National commander to visit Hurricane VFW
HURRICANE, W.Va. — Veterans of Foreign Wars national Commander-in-Chief Glen Gardner is slated to visit Hurricane's VFW Post #9097 at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18.
A Vietnam veteran, Gardner of Round Rock, Texas, has headed America's largest organization serving combat veterans since August 2008.
He is encouraging growth in the organization that dates back to the late 1800s.
"The VFW must be attractive to today's generation of military service men and women, so they can assume more leadership roles within the organization at the local level,” said Gardner, who served in the Marine Corps from 1966 to 1970.
Gardner added that he would like to add 175,000 new members to the membership rolls during his leadership year, as well as increase post participation in the VFW's core programs. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, with its auxiliaries, includes 2.2 million members in approximately 8,100 posts worldwide, according to the organization’s Web site.
"It is an honor to host the VFW national Commander at Post 9097," said Post Commander Bill Lambert. “Seldom do local posts have the opportunity to welcome our commander-in chief, and we are looking forward to Commander Gardner's visit to Hurricane."
Hurricane's VFW post members, Ladies Auxiliary and Men's Auxiliary will host an informal dinner for Gardner at the post with hot bologna sandwiches, potato salad, macaroni salad and desserts.
For more information, call Bill Lambert, commander of VFW Mountaineer Post # 9097, at 304-757-9766. The post is located at 3836 Teays Valley Road.
