Longtime WV-AFT President Judy Hale to retire

November 08, 2012 @ 06:40 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Longtime West Virginia-American Federation of Teachers President Judy Hale is retiring.

Hale has served as the union’s president since 1990. She was a teacher for 22 year before she became the union’s leader.

Her replacement is Marlinton Middle School teacher Christine Campbell. Campbell will become president in six months.

Hale tells the Charleston Gazette that she’s stepping down because of medical problems.

She says getting the Safe Schools Act of 1995 passed is her biggest accomplishment. The law enforces stricter disciplinary policies for weapons at schools and other issues.

Hale also helped lead the state’s first technology task force for schools in the early 1990s.
