Marshall kicks off homecoming events this week

Marshall University celebrates Homecoming 2008 this week. The week-long festivities culminate with the Thundering Herd's 4:30 p.m. football game versus Central Florida on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Here is a list of some of this week's special events.

Monday:

Office Decorations. Marshall University employees are asked to decorate their offices to promote Homecoming 2008, using the theme, Go Green...Go Herd. Prizes will be awarded at the Coaches Breakfast Friday morning.

Thursday

The naming of the Homecoming Court will be at noon in the lobby of the Memorial Student Center.

Office Decoration judging will begin at 1 p.m.

Friday

Green & White Day

The first official Alumni Association event of Homecoming weekend is the Coaches Breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m. at the Erickson Alumni Center. This live radio broadcast lets those present as well as radio listeners get to know the coaches. The DAWG, 93.7 FM, will start broadcasting at 6 a.m.; the coaches will join in throughout the broadcast.

At noon will be the Memorial Fountain Ceremony. The fountain will be turned off at the Memorial Student Center in remembrance of the 1970 plane disaster. CNN correspondent Joe Johns will speak at the ceremony.

The Pi Kappa Alpha's of the '50s will have its traditional every-two-years reunion with a dinner-dance at 6 p.m. at the Palms Room, 314 Ninth Street (second floor). For details and reservations, contact Jim Jones at 704-759-9585.

Alumni and Black Alumni Homecoming Reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Marshall Hall of Fame Café. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and cash bar. Cost $15 per person. Call 304-696-2901 for reservations.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday is a Homecoming concert featuring the Steve Miller Band at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. Special reserved seating through the Marshall University Alumni Association for active members. Prime seating for only $35.00 per ticket ($20.00 off the $55.00 selling price) with a limit of 4 per person. To order these special tickets, you must call the alumni office at 304-696-2901 or 800-682-5869.

Tickets are available to the general public at the arena box office, 304-523-5757, and at all Ticketmaster locations for $55, $45 and $25 plus applicable fees. The concert is sponsored by the Marshall University Alumni Association and the Student Activities Programming Board.

Saturday

Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority Alumnae Homecoming Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at the Tri Sigma house.

Inaugural ROTC Alumni and Friends Brunch, 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Pullman Plaza Hotel, 1001 Third Ave.

The Homecoming Parade, GO GREEN...GO HERD!, sponsored by the Student Government Association, begins at noon downtown at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena and ends at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium. This year's Grand Marshal will be CNN correspondent Joe Johns (BA'80).

MU Alumni Association's Lunch Under the Tent at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 20th Street. Watch the parade, listen to music and join us for chili, hot dogs and pizza as well as a selection of cold beverages. Cost is $10 reservations can be made at 304-696-2901.

The College of Health Professions elegant tailgate from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Memorial Student Center Shawkey Dining Room. Guests are invited to watch the Homecoming Parade from the Student Center Balcony.

Memorial Walk by members of the Thundering Herd football team will begin at 3 p.m. from the Cam Henderson Center to the Stadium.

The Step Show, sponsored by the National PanHellenic Council, will be after the game in the Jean Stephenson Auditorium, 800 5th Ave. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 the door. For more information, go to www.marshall.edu/NPHC.
