Mall hosts Strawberry Shortcake during Family Fun Weekend
HUNTINGTON -- More than 100 children gathered around Strawberry Shortcake on Saturday during Family Fun Weekend at the Huntington Mall.
"It was probably the biggest turnout we've ever had for a storybook character. The line was huge," said Heather Estep, assistant marketing director at the mall.
Estep said the event also was a great way to bring people to the mall and kick off the holiday shopping season. Activities included story time with WOWK-TV 13 and a puppet show by Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.
"It's really exciting because we get to see all the families come together. They really do gather at the Huntington Mall," she said.
Kim Varnum of Huntington brought her 7-year-old daughter Channing to the mall to play on the Strawberry Shortcake "bounce house" and watch the puppets. While Varnum's holiday gift-buying is almost done, she said she welcomes any excuse to visit the mall.
Charlie and Valerie Dennison also were out with their family on Saturday, though they were focused on buying winter clothes. The Dennisons traveled from Willow Wood, Ohio, to shop and get gift ideas with their children Jessica Easthom, 17, and Jacob Easthom, 13.
Charlie Dennison said he could tell the stores were gearing up for the holidays, with extra cashiers in many of the shops.
"I think the businesses are preparing themselves for the season," he said.
The Huntington Mall kicked off its "Storybook Christmas" on Nov. 1 with story time and the Berenstain Bears.
Holiday events are scheduled throughout the end of December.

10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15: Santa's Polar Express arrival at the Macy's Dome. The Jeslyn Performing Arts Center will perform. Hot cocoa from Starbucks and cookie cake from Great American Cookies will be provided. The first 200 kids to the performance will receive a ticket to receive a special gift.
Noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15: Meet and greet Clifford the Big Red Dog at the Macy's Dome. Story time with WOWK-TV 13 at 1 p.m.
2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16: Meet and greet Clifford the Big Red Dog at the Macy's Dome. Story read by the mall Fashion Advisory Board.
11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 through Wednesday, Dec. 24: Photos with Santa at the mall gazebo. Sunday photos will take place between noon and 6 p.m.
Noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22: Meet and greet Wild Thing at the Macy's Dome. Story time at 1 p.m.
9 a.m.-noon Sunday, Nov. 23: Pet photos with Santa at the mall gazebo. Pets must be on a leash or in a carrier at all times.
2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23: Meet and greet Wild Thing at the Macy's Dome. Story time at 3 p.m.
