MU parking garage fall kills student

November 03, 2008 @ 02:54 PM

HUNTINGTON — Free counseling was offered to students Monday at Marshall University, hours after classmate fell from the roof of the university’s parking garage.

Officials believe it was an apparent suicide.

Cabell County 911 received word of the incident just after 7:30 a.m. It happened on the 3rd Avenue side of the six-story parking garage. It’s located across from the Henderson Center — the school’s basketball arena.

Bill Bissett, director of public relations for Marshall University, would not confirm the man’s name or age. He said the man’s fall was no accident.

“This act was intentional,” he said. “Based on all indications there was absolutely no foul play with this incident.”

Emergency officials transported the student to Cabell Huntington Hospital’s Trauma Unit, where a spokesperson confirmed his death Monday afternoon.

Bissett confirmed the man’s status as a student. He said university immediately notified the man’s family, who then traveled to the Huntington campus.

“We ask that you respect his family’s privacy during this difficult time,” Bissett said in a prepared release.

Students in need of counseling should contact the university’s Counseling Center, according to Carla Lapelle, associate dean of student affairs.

The Counseling Center is located on the first floor of Prichard Hall in Huntington. Those in need should call 304-696-3111. After 5 p.m., they should call 304-696-HELP (4357). Counseling is available 24 hours a day.

The university would not release the student’s name because of his request for confidentiality. He made that request upon enrolling at the university. Federal privacy guidelines provide for such a request.

Emergency crews arrived, loaded the man into an ambulance and left the scene within 15 minutes. Huntington firefighters picked up items from the sidewalk. The Marshall University Police Department is handling the case.

The incident caused minor traffic delays, as the response blocked a portion of 3rd Avenue.
