Name released in W.Va. 2 fatal crash
HUNTINGTON — A local woman was returning home late Tuesday when she died as result of a two-vehicle crash near Lesage, according to Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas.
The accident occurred just before 11:40 p.m. at the intersection of Fraziers Lane and W.Va. 2, near the Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area.
The Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as Patsy Kay Blankenship Chapman, 50, of Lesage.
Chapman’s vehicle was stopped or nearly stopped when a Jeep Cherokee struck it from behind, McComas said. It knocked the woman’s car off W.Va. 2, up an embankment, through a woven fence and onto the edge of a railroad track bed.
The violent impact caused massive rear-end damage to the woman’s vehicle, McComas said. She died at the scene.
Investigators believe the Cherokee’s driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, McComas said citing the preliminary investigation.
“It’s tragic,” McComas said, noting the lack of other contributing circumstances.
The subsequent investigation forced authorities to keep W.Va. 2 closed until 3 a.m. Wednesday. McComas said its findings will be reviewed and presented to the Cabell County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration.
