Man charged with taking drugs into jail

Dec. 05, 2012 @ 09:31 AM

BARBOURSVILLE — Christian Garrett Thornton initially faced two misdemeanors, but State Police added a felony when court documents allege he took drugs into the Western Regional Jail.

Thornton, 27, was initially arrested by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and jailed at 2 a.m. Friday on misdemeanor charges of obstruction and drug possession.

The felony was added when a correctional officer heard the crumbling of a plastic bag. That occurred as Thronton prepared for a strip search at the jail. It was based, in part, on the arresting deputy’s suspicion that Thornton might still have drugs on his person, according to a criminal complaint filed in Cabell County Magistrate Court.

Thornton initially refused to hand over the bag and attempted to swallow the drugs to no avail. Officers seized the drugs confirming they consisted of 2 Opana pills and a 0.25 gram of methamphetamine, the complaint states.

A nurse medically cleared Thronton before and after the drug seizure, the complaint states.

Thronton was released at 1 p.m. Tuesday on bond, according to jail records.
