Print / E-Paper Exclusive: Help for wounded soldiers

Dec. 09, 2012 @ 08:03 AM

The story of one particular soldier, wounded in combat and laid up at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C., was enough to break Danny Day’s heart.

Arriving stateside for treatment of his injuries, the solider could fit all his earthly possessions in a brown paper bag.

“He had a bar of soap wrapped up in a washcloth and a disposable razor that was at least two weeks old,” said Day, a two-time Purple Heart recipient and Vietnam veteran living in Ashland. “When I heard that, that bugged me. It wasn’t acceptable to me. Something had to be done.”
