20th Street viaduct reopens to traffic

December 30, 2009 @ 11:55 AM

HUNTINGTON – A stretch of road damaged in a Huntington water main break on Dec. 17 has been repaired and is now open again to traffic, according to a prepared release.

The paving of the road at the 20th Street viaduct near the intersection with 8th Avenue was completed Tuesday evening by Adkins Construction, the contractor hired by West Virginia American Water to do the work.

“It was our goal to get this thoroughfare reopened as quickly as possible,” said West Virginia American Water President Wayne Morgan. “We were able to do that in less than two weeks thanks to the cooperation of the city of Huntington, the state Division of Highways, our hardworking crews and the contractor.”

West Virginia American Water apologizes for any inconvenience to the motorists who had to find an alternate route during the 13 days this stretch of road was impassable.

When the 12-inch water main located beneath the street ruptured, the pressure created a buckling effect on the road. West Virginia American Water employees were able to valve off the main and bring the leak under control within two hours. There was no discernable loss of service, and a boil water advisory was deemed unnecessary. The Huntington Police Department and other city officials assisted West Virginia American Water crews as they worked to bring the leak under control by securing the area and redirecting traffic.
