Driver’s license renewal vision screening to begin in 2009
CHARLESTON — Beginning January 2, 2009, The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles will require all applicants for driver’s license renewals to pass a vision screening before the renewal will be issued.
Applicants must be able to see (with or without corrective lenses) at a level of 20/40 in the best eye. This screening process is the same standard that all new drivers must meet before being issued their first West Virginia driver’s license.
West Virginia is now one of more than 40 states to require mandatory vision screening at the time of driver’s license renewal for safety reasons.
To screen your vision at the DMV, a representative will ask the applicant to look into a vision machine and read various lines of letters or numbers.
Alternatively, applicants may bring a completed vision report form signed by a licensed optometrist and dated less than 90 days from the application date. This will indicate that the applicant meets the minimum vision requirements. Applicants who provide the form signed by an optometrist will not be required to complete the vision screening at the DMV office.
For more information please call the Division of Motor Vehicles at 1-800-642-9066.
