TTA bus, two vehicles involved in accident

Oct. 13, 2012 @ 12:23 AM

HUNTINGTON -- A Tri-State Transit Authority bus carrying about 15 people was involved in a three-vehicle accident Friday morning at 9th Street West and Madison Avenue in Huntington.

According to several witnesses, some of whom were getting ready to enter the bus, at about 10:30 a.m., a car trying to turn west on Madison Avenue collided with a pickup truck which already was heading west on Madison.

Two passengers on the bus were taken to the hospital as a precaution, but there were no major injuries. A female passenger in the car had a few cuts on her hands.

She and the car's driver said they were inching out from 9th Street West to make the turn. But they said a U.S. Postal Truck was parked so close to the intersection on Madison Avenue that it was difficult to see if any vehicles were coming.

Onlookers said the same thing. Jonathan Jones said he had just stepped on the bus and jumped back off when he saw the truck about to hit the bus.

"You can't see traffic behind the mail truck," Jones said.

The owner of Rich's Automotive, located on the southwest corner of the intersection, said he sees near-misses every day. And, he said, many times it's because the mail truck doesn't park far enough back from the intersection.

The TTA bus sustained a broken windshield and the bumper was scuffed, said TTA general manager Paul Davis. The truck and car were both towed from the scene.
