CCSAPP to host underage drinking town hall

Oct. 14, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The Cabell County Substance Abuse Prevention Partnership will host an underage drinking town hall from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the St. Mary's Center for Education, at 5th Avenue and 29th Street in Huntington.

The public town hall will address policy issues contributing to youth access of alcohol. Community members will have the opportunity to voice their opinions and discuss solutions.

Among the topics of discussion will be social host laws, responsible beverage service, retail shop liability and West Virginia's bar entrance age of 18.

Data from the 2011 PRIDE survey will also be presented, which includes underage drinking statistics from Cabell County students in sixth through 11th grades. Youth focus group results from the Cabell County Teen Summit will be discussed as well.

Communities Mobilizing for Change in Alcohol interview results also will be presented. The coalition of CCSAPP conducted 100 interviews with people representing diverse sectors in the community, including officials from schools, government, media and faith-based entities.

The event falls on the inaugural Above the Influence Day. Above the Influence is a program of the White House office of Drug Control Policy which celebrates youth refraining from substance abuse. It also recognizes the power of prevention efforts in local communities

More town halls focused on other topics are being planned for the coming months.

In addition to the town hall, Huntington Middle School students are planning Above the Influence events and will participate in a three-part series. The first component, "Tag It," asks students to literally tag the influences in their lives and share them with the world. The series focuses on the negative influence of substance abuse in life and provides youth with ways to avoid substance use and abuse, as well as other risky behaviors.
