Residents work to clean up community

October 07, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

BURLINGTON, Ohio -- Residents in Fayette Township and Burlington, Ohio, are working together to make their community cleaner.

For about 10 years, officials with Concerned Citizens of Burlington have sponsored cleanup days which are now held each spring and fall.

Saturday was the second and final day of the fall event, which permits residents to bring trash to the Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department or have someone go and pick it up for them. Mike Finley, a trustee with the fire department, estimated they would do close to 50 pickups and assist with more than 100 people dropping items off. He said they filled two 40-yard trash bins just on Friday, with everything from household garbage to old furniture to broken appliances.

Harriette Ramsey, president of the Concerned Citizens of Burlington organization, said the cleanups have made an impact on the how the community looks and the attitude of residents.

"There's been a change in our community," Ramsey said. "We know we've made a dent and accomplished something."

Burlington resident Bob Stewart, who was dropping off old wood and other scrap items for himself and his neighbor, said he also has noticed a difference in the cleanliness in the community. And he said he appreciates the work being done by Concerned Citizens of Burlington and the fire department.

Local residents also were able to donate items for a yard sale which took place inside the fire department. Proceeds go to the community group, which helps support Burlington Commons Park.
