Old caboose being restored for depot

March 14, 2010 @ 09:02 AM

CATLETTSBURG, Ky. (AP) — A four-decades old railroad caboose will get a new life as part of an eastern Kentucky tourist attraction.

Officials in Catlettsburg are acquiring, moving and restoring the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad car, built in 1969 and moving it to a new home next to the former C&O Depot, now the Russell E. Compton Civic Center.

Catlettsburg Main Street Director Frank Branham told the Ashland Daily Independent that the project should be complete by Labor Day.

Compton, Branham laughs, will greet guests at the dedication from the cupola of the caboose.

"Since the day we got this building restored, Russ has been saying we need a caboose out there. It's becoming a reality," Branham said, referring to the civic center.

Compton acquired the caboose from its former owner CSX Transportation Inc. earlier this year.
