Soprano to present recital today at Johnson Memorial UMC
HUNTINGTON -- Soprano Marlayna Maynard and pianist William A. Murphy will present a recital of art songs and operatic arias at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 30, in the sanctuary of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Huntington.
The recital is part of the Music at Johnson Memorial Series.
Featured on the program will be music of Gaetano Donizetti, Claude Debussy, Richard Strauss, Samuel Barber, and Leonard Bernstein. Highlights will include the aria "Regnava nel silenzio" from Donizetti's tragedy Lucia di Lamermoor and the farcical "Glitter and be Gay" from Bernstein's Candide.
Maynard and Murphy have taught as adjunct music faculty at Marshall University. This will be Maynard's final recital in Huntington before she begins studies at the University of Memphis this fall, where she will pursue the doctor of musical arts degree in performance. She is originally from Dunlow, W.Va.
Murphy, originally from western Kentucky, recently graduated from Marshall University with a master of arts in performance. In addition to his work at Marshall, he is the organist at St. John's Episcopal Church and the accompanist of the West Virginia Symphony Chorus.
