Caboose Museum: Hurricane’s railroad history is still evident on History Row in the center of the city. Folks may find historical artifacts and railroad memorabilia in the restored “caboose museum” and view a bit of pre-history Hurricane, a 77-inch petroglyph that bears the image of the ancient “Water Monster’s Daughter.” To schedule a personal tour of the museum, call 304-562-5896.
Hurricane City Park: Hurricane City Park, located adjacent to the water reservoir on W.Va. 34 in Hurricane, offers picnic areas, playgrounds and areas for basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, skateboarding and walking or jogging. Just this season, a new sprayground opened at the park. The park is available for family gatherings, class reunions or school outings. The rental fee is $50 for the entire day. The sprayground can also be rented in the evenings. There are several picnic shelters, most of which are equipped with electricity. Hurricane Skatewinds Skate Park: Located within Hurricane City Park, Skatewinds is touted as the first skate park in the state of West Virginia. Skateboarding equipment, including ramps, quarter pipes, half pipes and a fun box, provide challenges for young and old alike. The skate park is open during park hours for the public. Mardi Gras Casino and Resort: Located just off the Nitro exit of I-64 near the Putnam/Kanawha County border, Tri-State Casino and Resort is a Mardi Gras-style gaming center that offers greyhound races, slots, table games, food and entertainment, and an on-site hotel. The Big Easy Poker Room offers Texas Hold’Em, Omaha Hi-Lo and 7-Card Stud. Live bands play at The French Quarter Restaurant and Lounge. Call 304-776-1000.
The Valley Park: This 60-acre park in Hurricane is home to Waves of Fun Water Park, which includes multiple waterslides and a wave pool where swimmers can relax on rented floats. Valley Park is also home to Valley Park Community Center; an 18-hole mini golf course; baseball and softball fields; tennis courts; beach volleyball court; Hernshaw Soccer Pitch; multi-purpose fields; stocked catch-andrelease fishing ponds; four miles of walking trails; an outdoor amphitheatre, 30and 250seat picnic shelters; Valley Park Pavillion outdoor, synthetic ice rink (open November through March, regardless of temperature); playgrounds and more. The Putnam County Park: This 200-acre park in Eleanor is also home of the Ernest Page Jr. Putnam County Fairground. Park amenities include Putnam County Pool; baseball fields; picnic shelters; outdoor amphitheater; stock barns; horseshow ring; basketball courts; Little Buffalo Creek; the restored Lett Creek One Room School; 10 miles of hiking/ mountain biking trails and a playground. Putnam County Farmers Market: Open usually May through October, at Hurricane City Park. Farmers and growers within a 50-mile radius of Putnam County are invited to sell their produce and products. Some craft spaces are also available. The market runs from 3:30-7 p.m. Tuesdays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Waves of Fun: Waves of Fun Water Park, located within Valley Park in Hurricane, is open daily through Labor Day (schedule is subject to change). It offers three large waterslides, an oceanlike wave pool, concessions, mini-golf, sand volleyball and more. General Admission is $9; Children 5-11 are $7; Children 4 and younger are free; seniors 60 and older are $7; all admission is half price after 4 p.m. Float rental is $4.
