Wayne County — peaceful and pastoral today — is named for an American war hero, Gen. “Mad Anthony” Wayne, who defeated the Shawnee Indians in the Battle of Fallen Timbers, clearing the way for white settlers to safely enter the region and begin claiming homesteads.

Wayne County highlights

ORIGIN: Wayne County was established by the state of Virginia on Jan. 18, 1842. It and 43 other counties joined to form West Virginia on June 20, 1863. It’s the westernmost county in what is now the state of West Virginia, and it was named in honor of Gen. “Mad Anthony” Wayne. The general is credited with making the region safe for a white settlement, after defeating the Shawnee Indians in the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
