Discount offered for 'Bloom' flowers

May. 09, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

BARBOURSVILLE -- Barboursville Home Depot is offering 10 percent discounts on red, white and blue flowers from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 11, as part of the Huntington in Bloom competition.

The discount is limited to $25 per person. As a special treat, all children will be able to plant a flower to give to their mother.

Master Gardener and Huntington in Bloom organizer Tom Bell will also be at Home Depot on Saturday promoting Huntington in Bloom and answering any gardening questions.

The Huntington in Bloom Committee chose red, white and blue as the colors to be used in this year's campaign, Bell said.

Huntington in Bloom is a community effort to beautify public areas with floral and tree plantings and landscaping, and by removing litter and graffiti. The program also focuses on historic preservation and environmental issues.

This is Huntington's first year participating in the America in Bloom competition. Judges will be in the Huntington area in July to evaluate the community's work. However, local organizers intend for Huntington in Bloom to be an ongoing program for years to come.
