MU's Rec Fest to be bigger than ever
HUNTINGTON -- The Marshall University Recreation Center will have its sixth annual Rec Fest from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23.
The annual event is part of Marshall's Week of Welcome. The annual event allows more than 100 vendors from around town to interact with new students.
"We're expecting to have about 2,500 students come in during those three hours," said Michele Muth, assistant director of Marketing and Memship at the Rec Center. "This year we will accommodate extra vendors. We are up to 115 to 120 vendors. We open up all four basketball courts. We have local businesses, churches and student groups market to students who are new to the Huntington area. We have a lot of banks, restaurants, and stores coming in. They always have something to give away. There are coupons for free food, T-shirts and students always leave with bags full of free stuff."
The event will have drawings, music, giveaways and a number of games outside the Rec Center.
"We usually start about six months before the event to figure out how to market to the vendors before the event," Muth said. "Since the event is part of the W.O.W (Week of Welcome) that really helps us. It's the last day of the W.O.W. Students are off on Sunday and classes start on the 25th.
"During the Rec Fest we will have the climbing wall open so people can try climbing," she added. "We will have different demos going on in the center court of the Rec Center. We will have personal training, some fitness classes going on, and some team building exercises. We also have T-shirts we will be giving away. This year we are going to have four T-shirts and they will have a 'Star Wars' theme. One has Darth Vader riding a spinner bike."
There will be a free water bottle for the first 500 students who enter the Rec Fest at noon.
"Our main sponsor this year is the Huntington Color Run which is offering special coupons who visit the RecFest," she said. "Runners can save $5 off registration and if they join a team they can save an additional $5," Muth said. "We are also sponsored Chase Bank and Congressmen Nick Rahall's campaign is a sponsor. Enterprise and Marshall Orthopedics are sponsors."
