Mar. 31, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The Marshall University Recreation Center will be hosting its new Kids Night Out event on Friday, April 5.

Kids Night Out is a new program that will give children the chance to spend an evening swimming, climbing the rock wall and partaking a variety of games and activities. There will also be a pizza party. The event will last from 5 to 9 p.m.

For members of the Rec Center, participation in the event will cost $15 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. For non-members the event costs $20 for the first child, $10 for each additional child.

"We've done the Kids Night Out event twice in the past," said Michele Muth, assistant director of marketing and membership. "We experimented with the event as part of our fitness camps back in December. The idea was that it could give kids something to do while their parents were out shopping. It was such a success that we brought it back in February. We now plan to do about one Kids Night Out a month. The kids loved the event and begged to come back."

Muth said the cost is comparable to paying a sitter.

"If you hire a babysitter, they'll charge around $10 an hour," she said. "We think we're providing parents a real value. We will provide children with an evening of entertainment providing parents time to go out to dinner, go shopping, catch a movie, etc. The children will have an opportunity to get out and make new friends."

The staff is also focused on keep the kids excited about participating.

"We are trying to change the games each time," said Dan Belcher, facility operations coordinator. "Last time we had a parachute. Kids can also play basketball, swim in the vortex pool and climb the rock wall. We're expecting 25 to 30 guests, but we can have up to 50 children. We will have a staff of 12-15 volunteers."

Parents need to register for the event by Thursday, April 4. To make a reservation, call Belcher at 304-696-4651. Cash, credit card or checks are accepted forms of payment. Checks must be made out to the Campus Rec Club.

All children must be potty trained. All employees working the event are first aid and CPR certified.
