HSTA kicks off summer institute

Purchase this photoHUNTINGTON -- When the summer academy director David Cartwright asked a roomful of 110 ninth-grade students how they were doing Sunday afternoon just before dinner, the quiet and anxious students got a little help from the back of the room.
"Wonderful -- yeah," Marshall University student, Michael Hamner said with a cheerleader-like yell over the crowd.
Hamner has been there, enjoyed that and is back to help out when it comes to Marshall University's Health Science & Technology Academy (HSTA) Summer Institute that kicked off late Sunday afternoon with a dinner at the MU Memorial Student Center.
An 18-year-old MU student majoring in respiratory therapy, Hamner of Huntington said being fresh out of HSTA, he wanted to be a college counselor to share his knowledge of the college with the younger students.
"I think definitely I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for HSTA," Hamner said. "It was a great financial help and exposed me to the science fields and other areas I hadn't explored."
