Bookstore ready for 'fall rush'

Aug. 18, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- At the Marshall University Bookstore they call it "Fall Rush" for a reason.

Soon thousands of students will be converging on campus and many will be shopping for text books, notebooks and other supplies. The time from the Week of Welcome to the end of the first week of classes is the busiest time of year for the bookstore.

"Back to school is basically a three week process from the Week of Welcome, to the first week of class and the following week," said Mike Campbell, store manager at the Marshall University Bookstore. "The fall rush is something we prepare for all summer long, and we start to prepare for it in May. In the summer we have orientation and we want to be prepared to have textbook availability for freshmen at that point and time. "For the rush weeks we bring in a lot of additional team members. We will have as many as 20 to 30 additional team members to help us out."

To better serve students, the bookstore has offers a number of different options. Students can purchase new and used textbooks as well as digital E-book copies for mobile devices. There is also the option of renting textbooks. First time renters must be over the age of 18 then present a student ID or drivers license, an email address, and a credit or debit card to serve as collateral. If a student fails to return a used textbook by the end of the semester, he or she will have to pay for a replacement.

"We implemented the textbook rental program two years ago," Campbell said. "It can save students up to 50% when they rent. The rental program is very simplistic. You can rent the book, you can write in it, highlight paragraphs, you can use it like you would any other book. Just don't abuse it. Someone will use the same book next semester. Upon the initial rental they will receive an email from our rental server to complete the initial rental process. This takes less than 5 minutes. Once complete they're ready to rent for the rest of their college career."

Students wishing to order online and get an early jump on the rush can visit http://marshall.bkstr.com . They can pick their orders up at the online order office located in the bookstore.

In addition to textbooks and supplies, the store will offer a wide selection of Marshall memorabilia including hats, T-shirts and hooded sweatshirts.
