Marshall University upgrades its email system

Jul. 21, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University recently updated its email system.

The newly upgraded email system is powered by Microsoft Office 365 and replaces the earlier system through live@edu. The new service allows for a single sign-on system for student accounts. Marshall made the transition to the new system on Monday, July 15. The new system will be available to all Marshall students and will not impact facility and staff using Marshall University email.

"The changes are primarily through the services that are through the back end of Marshall University email," said Jody Perry, executive director of Technology Services at Marshall Information Technology. "Students will have additional access to new calendaring functions and in the future they will have access to a variety of Microsoft Office Online products such as Word, Excel, and Power Point. All email addresses will not change, and all previously existing email will be transferred to the new account."

Students will need to update their login information on smart phones and other mobile devices.

"In the past, students logged into the email portal through a Marshall University ID number and a pin," Perry said. "Now students will log into the portal with their Internet username and a password. The same username and password you use to log in to computer labs will be used to log into MyMU. Students will now only have to remember one set of login credentials."

Marshall Information Technology will have detailed instructions on how to set up information on different mobile devices.

"This change was planned for several months," Perry said. "We originally announced it in April of this year, so we have been working on it for a number of months. It was not a project that we planned to undertake until Microsoft discontinued its Live@edu services. Planning was the biggest part of the transition. We had to make sure we got the announcements out and that people knew what was going on. We sent out multiple emails regarding the University communications announcement and posted things all around campus. We worked carefully with Microsoft to make sure everything was done in time. It's a collaborative effort between us and them."

The upgraded Office 365 system will be easily accessible through the updated Marshall University portal, myMU (www.marshall.edu/myMU).
