Marshall students work with local children on Global Youth Service Day

May. 18, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University students recently spent two days to help spruce up the playground at Marcum Terrace for Global Youth Service Day.

Twenty-five students from the departments of Communication Disorders and Criminal Justice, along with residents at St. John's House Learning and Development Center, leaned the playground on April 26 and returned the next day to paint it.

Now in its 25th year, Global Youth Service Day encourages youth-led service projects that positively affect the young people in each community, said Pam Holland, director of clinical education in the College of Health Professions' Department of Communication Disorders.

"We want to increase the awareness that anyone, at any age, can give back to their community," Holland said. "We particularly want to inspire the children at Marcum Terrace this weekend."
