Career services helps in job search

May. 19, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Another school year has passed at Marshall University which means many students and recent graduates are on the hunt for a career, internship or a part-time job.

The Career Services Center at Marshall will continue to provide assistance to students throughout the summer. The center will continue to offer career counseling, resume help and mock interviews.

The center also has a variety of online help including Jobtrax, an online employment website and online mock-interview system called Interview Stream.

"Interview Stream is an online virtual interview," said Debby Stoler, assistant director for Development and Outreach at the Center. "You can log into Interview Stream and request say a 10-question interview for an accounting job. There will be someone on the other side who will have those questions and ask them to you. When you are finished you can go back and look at how you looked during the interview. It's really eye opening for students to see how they looked during the interview. They can see their body language, see what they said, and see how many times they said something. It's a really good way for students to critique themselves.

"Almost every student has an account with Jobtrax," Stoler added. "If their account hasn't been activated, we can activate if for them. Students can upload their resumes so they will be right there to use to apply for jobs. Students can search local, regional and national employers through two different databases. One is our own local database and the other is through the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). They can search via keyword, region, or location. This gives a wide variety of jobs that are currently available to apply for."

Students can also come in for help on job searches, receive advice on how to choose a major and look at information on summer internships. There is also the Marshall Mentor Network where students can find a mentor for professional advice. The Career Services Center is located at 1681 5th Ave. It is open during the summer from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
