Herd to have orientation

May. 26, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Summer is upon us and that means that many students will be stepping on the campus of Marshall University for the first time.

There will be New Student Orientation sessions hosted by the Office of Campus Recruitment on the weeks of June 19-21, July 9-12 and Aug. 1-2. Registration for the June session is closed, but students can schedule orientation at a later date. Additionally students who have haven't decided where they will be going or want an early glimpse at campus before graduating high school can schedule a tour of campus through the Office of Campus Recruitment at any time.

"Orientation is much more extensive than just a tour of campus," said Beth Wolfe, director of recruitment. "It's a half day program that allows students the opportunity to register for fall classes and go over that schedule with an advisor to see if they have any questions about the classes they are taking and their requirements. There will also be a session on campus housing or the resources available to commuter students. They will also have their picture taken for the student I.D. There is a session on campus IT resources. There are several portals we want to introduce them to such as MU Online for online classes an MyMU for student records. It's a lot of information for three hours. We also provide them lunch and a tour on campus."

There is also a program for parents.

"It goes over the various resources available to parents as well as the transition that students are making," Wolfe said. "We encourage parents to go to the tours. All incoming new students and transfer are expected to attend orientation. We also have an online orientation primarily for transfer students. There are also for students who may live oversees and can't attend the regular orientation."

Students should register for orientation as soon as possible. For more information, call the Orientation Office at 304-696-2354 or go online at http://muwww-new.marshall.edu/recruitment/orientation.

For those who are still weighing in on the option of enrolling at Marshall, now is a perfect time to take a tour of campus. Parents just need to contact the Office of Recruitment at 304-696-3646. Tours are at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. There is an additional tour at 2 p.m. Fridays.

"Guests on campus tours get lead around by a current student," Wolfe said. "They get a student perspective on things and get a basic overview of campus. One of the selling points of Marshall University is that our campus is very accessible and easy to navigate. At the conclusion of the tour they return to our welcome center and attend a presentation by one of our recruitment coordinators. They learn more about the institution, how to apply and what to do after being accepted. It's a good first step for high school juniors. We would love for them to take the tour and perhaps attend one of our open house events in the fall for additional information."
