HUNTINGTON — Healthy Herd Youth Camp will return for three days in November to give children an opportunity play, learn and interact at the Marshall Recreation Center. The camp will run from Monday, Nov. 25, through Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Registration for all three days is $75 for nonmembers and $55 for rec center members. Parents also have the option of registering for one or two days. Activities at the camp will include character building exercises, art and swimming in the rec center’s indoor pool.

The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Before- or after-care is available by arrangement at the rec center.

“This is the first time in a long time when the kids have had the whole week off for fall break, and while most people do plan to be home with their kids for Christmas, for Thanksgiving a lot of people continue working until Thanksgiving Day,” said Alex Boyer, assistant director of intramural and youth programs at Marshall.

“So with a lot of people stuck trying to figure out to what to do for child care, this provides us an with a great opportunity to continue to work with the community and do some youth programs similar to what we do in the summer,” he said.

Children are asked to bring a packed lunch and swimwear and wear sneakers or other athletic shoes. Flip-flops, shoes with heels and other shoes are discouraged.

“Typically what we’re going to focus on are some self-esteem programs as well as some team-building programs. We always do some unique crafts with the kids. A lot of the stuff we do is based on building a healthy lifestyle and ways they can stay active at home,” Boyer said.

“We also work on leadership causes. We have a lot of kids who have been here for several years, and they have learned to interact with the younger kids, and I think it helps from a behavioral standpoint. We have several kids who were campers for us at one point who are now counselors.”

The rec center will also offer a one-day Drop to Shop Winter Day Camp on Monday, Dec. 23. Registration for that event is $35 for nonmembers and $25 for members. The day camp is designed to allow parents to drop their kids off for some healthy activities and get some last-minute shopping done.
