Etiquette dinner returns

HUNTINGTON -- From interviews to company luncheons, a variety of business functions can be conducted during meals.

To help students learn about proper dining etiquette in a business environment, the Career Service Center will be hosting an Etiquette Dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 27. The event will be hosted by Terri Thompson, a professional etiquette coach.

The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. in room BE5 of the Memorial Student Center. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and professional dress is requited. The event is for students only. Juniors, seniors and graduate students are preferred. As seating is limited students should call the Career Service center at 304-696-2470 to reserve a spot. A $5 reservation fee is required, but the deposit will be refunded at the door.

Tickets must be picked up in advance at the Career Services Center. Cancellations must be made within 72 hours of the event to receive a full refund.

Debby Stoler, assistant director of Development and Outreach at the Career Services Center, hopes that students take a number of things away from the event.

"We hope mainly this hopes build their confidence level for when they meet a situation like this," Stoler said. "They have something they can recall as far how to handle themselves in a situation that can be nerve-racking. Terri Thompson travels all over the United States and does all kinds of presentations ranging from college campuses to businesses. She teaches many types of professional skills. She has a website called etiquetteinaction.com that offers different types of business and social etiquette training."

The etiquette dinner will take place over a four course meal including soup, salad, an entrée and a dessert.

"Thompson will talk as the courses are served, telling students what they should and shouldn't do and allowing them to ask questions," Stoler said. "It is an interactive event the whole time she's there. She will go from table to table showing students how to do things."

The Etiquette Dinner is a bi-annual event that takes place once each during the Fall and Spring semesters. This will mark the eighth time Thompson has conducted the dinner on Marshall's campus.
