There will be a rock climbing trip June 28-29 to Red River Gorge. The registration deadline is June 23. The trip is $69 for Rec Center members and $95 for non-members.
"Where we will be going there will be a different difficulties so both beginner and experienced rock climbers will be welcome," said Chad Steen, Outdoor Pursuits coordinator. "It will be two days so we will go down on the 28th and climb all day. We will camp out and have dinner. The next day we will be climbing into the evening before we come back home."
July 12-13 there will be a camping trip to Beech Fork State Park which will feature canoeing and kayaking. The trip is $65 for members and $90 for non-members. The deadline for registration July 7.
"This is really going to be a good way to showcase some local recreation," Steen said. "Beech Fork State Park is really great. For a lot of people it's not as out in the open as other places as it's tucked away near Huntington. This is really a great trip for locals. You'll have the option of canoeing or kayaking and we will be camping overnight."
The biggest trip of the year will be the Chicago trip. The trip will be from July 24-28, and registration deadline is June 20. The cost of the trip is $499 for members and $599 for non-members.
"This is a pretty unique offering for us," Steen said. "We're going to do some more tourism type trips starting this summer to a desired destination and really break the routine of traditional outdoor rec. We will be taking a 15 passenger van to Chicago and once we get there we will explore the city. We have a staff member from Chicago and we will be hitting a lot of local places. The price includes transportation, lodging and what it costs to get into some paid attractions. You will have to buy some of your meals however. We will be staying near downtown Chicago and we have some really nice hotel options right now though we haven't decided on the exact one just yet."
Finally, Outdoor Pursuits will be closing out the summer with a backpacking trip to Spruce Knob on Aug. 8-10. The registration deadline is Aug. 1. Registration is $150 for members and $200 for non-members.
"Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia, so this is a really unique opportunity for us," Steen said. "We will be backpacking in the back country and bringing all the food with us. We will be camping on the go. The cost of the trip includes transportation, meals, equipment rentals, and permits to camp in the back country."
